About Us

One Book. One Region is a project that encourages residents of eastern Connecticut to read the same book during the spring and summer months and then to come together to discuss what they've read. Libraries and schools offer book discussion opportunities for all ages and programs to complement the themes in the chosen book. The author is invited to visit the region in the fall to meet the readers, sign their books and answer their questions.

The goals as always, are to bring people together to discuss ideas, to broaden the appreciation of reading and to break down barriers among people. A book selection committee with members representing libraries, schools and community organizations meets regularly to evaluate suggestions leading to the final choice of the "one book."

The committee seeks book suggestions from residents of the region. Community members can click here to nominate a title to be eastern Connecticut's "one book".

In the past, residents of eastern Connecticut nominated titles ranging from Beowulf to Harry Potter. As you know, the final choice for 2002 was Snow in August by Pete Hamill, a 1997 novel about the friendship between an Irish Catholic boy and a rabbi in Brooklyn in the 1940s. Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, a futuristic fable exploring the value of the freedom of speech, was the "one book" for 2003. In 2004, the choice was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a story of friendship and betrayal set in Afghanistan. For 2005, Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder was selected.

Please let us know what book you think everyone in eastern Connecticut should be reading this year. The "one book" is announced in the spring.
